It's Time to Regulate Paid Online Horse Racing Tipsters

Every year, thousands of people pay for online horse racing tipping services in the hope of receiving expert advice from experienced professionals.

Many tipsters are honest, hardworking and invest countless hours analysing races, studying form and building genuine long-term records. They deserve recognition for the work they do.

However, I believe there is a growing problem that needs to be addressed.

The Problem

In my view, consumers often have no reliable way of knowing whether the selections they are paying for are genuinely the original work of the person selling them.

If a tipster presents selections as their own expert research when they are not, customers may be paying for something they never actually received.

Whether existing laws are sufficient to deal with every situation is a matter for the authorities, but from a consumer's perspective there is very little transparency and very little accountability.

This creates two serious problems:

  • Consumers can struggle to distinguish genuine professionals from those who may not be producing original work.
  • Honest tipsters who spend hours researching races are forced to compete against people who may simply be repackaging information.

Why This Matters

Some may think this is only a small issue because there are relatively few operators involved.

The reality is that a small number of online businesses can build very large audiences through social media and subscription platforms. If those businesses are misleading customers about the originality of their service, the impact can extend to many thousands of consumers.

People deserve to know what they are paying for.

My Proposal

I believe the Government should consider introducing stronger consumer protection for paid online tipping services.

Possible measures could include:

  • A registration or licensing system for businesses charging for horse racing tipping services.
  • Independent proofing of advertised results and performance claims.
  • Clear rules requiring honesty and transparency in marketing.
  • A requirement to disclose whether selections are original research or sourced from elsewhere.
  • Meaningful penalties for businesses that deliberately mislead consumers.

The purpose of regulation should not be to restrict honest tipsters. It should be to protect consumers and create a fair marketplace where genuine expertise is rewarded.

I've Written to My MP

I have written to my Member of Parliament asking for this issue to be considered.

If you believe consumers deserve greater transparency and protection, I encourage you to contact your own MP as well.

You are welcome to copy, adapt and send the template below, but I would recommend adding your own thoughts or experiences to make it more personal.

Letter to Your MP

Dear [MP's Name],

I am writing as one of your constituents to ask that Parliament considers introducing stronger consumer protection for paid online horse racing tipster services.

Many consumers pay subscription fees believing they are purchasing genuine expertise and original research. However, there appears to be very little transparency regarding how some paid selections are produced or whether they are genuinely the work of the person selling them.

While existing laws may apply in some situations, I believe there is a need for clearer regulation that gives consumers greater confidence and provides honest businesses with a level playing field.

I believe the Government should consider:

  • Independent proofing of advertised results.
  • Greater transparency regarding the originality of paid selections.
  • Clear standards for advertising profits and performance.
  • Appropriate regulation for businesses charging consumers for tipping services.

Such measures would help protect consumers, improve confidence in the industry and encourage higher professional standards.

I would be grateful if you could raise this issue with the relevant Minister and advise whether the Government has any plans to review consumer protection in this area.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns.

Yours sincerely,

[Your Name]
